MAN-E-NEWS// Captain Sturnbrau “Deep Blue Sea” Edition from Jon Paul Kaiser x Toy2R…

It’s been a while since we’ve heard any news with regards to more Captain Sturnbrau colourways, so it came with great pleasure yesterday to find that JPK and Toy2R are gearing up for the spooky “Deep Blue Sea” edition’s imminent release! Coming cast in a clear aqua blue vinyl, the 5″ Mini Qee should be seeing the light of day sometime in June. As with previous Sturnbrau releases, expect to find “Deep Blue Sea” in limited quantities at your local designer toy emporium for around $40 (£28). Expect more news on exact dates and edition size soon…

“As the tide rolls in, it brings a warning from the sea… the Captain is not gone, but waiting. Deep in the water the peg-legged pirate waits to set sail once again on the Whispering Corsair along with his crew of undead shipmates.”

MAN-E-NEWS// The Midnight Marauder and Norse Eatin’ Dragon customs from Jon Paul Kaiser…

The ever busy Jon Paul Kaiser has been hard at work on another two stunning custom pieces, the Cap’n Sturnbrau Midnight Marauder and Norse Eatin’ Dragon! The first custom we’ve seen Jon’s Sturnbrau “Pieces of Eight” variant, the piece abandons the use of bold lines and stark contrasts in favour of a more subtle approach, accenting the sculpt’s beautiful shapes whilst offering a hint of the detail found in the original production piece. No news as to whether this guy is available to purchase, but we’re guessing that he was for a private commission. Hit Jon up through Flickr for more details…

Yet another rare choice of platform, JPK’s next piece comes in the form of the Norse Eatin’ Dragon, a 3″ Amanda Visell Baby-Eatin’ Croc from the Vivisect Playset! The faux wooden sculpt of the figure looks tremendous in Jon’s black and white style, really helping to give a new spin on an already ingenious piece. Our favourite detail has to be the poor little viking awaiting certain death- his Obelix styled pants and moustache are absolutely hilarious! Again, we’re unsure as to whether this piece is available to purchase, so your best bet is to hit Jon up here.

MAN-E-NEWS// JC Rivera’s “Platoon Hero” debut on the Tenacious Toys Kickstarter campaign…

With only 5 days left, Tenacious Toys‘ are planning one last push for their Uncle Argh Kickstarter campaign, and what better way to do it than to offer up JC Rivera‘s recently revealed “Platoon Hero” as a reward?! After hearing of AW177’s generous custom Munny donation, fellow artist Rivera stepped up by offering one of the first casts of the 4″ resin figure, plus an accompanying sketch! Available for just $125, be sure to head over to the Uncle Argh project page and make your pledge quick- this beautiful piece wont be around for long…

Rivera has stated that “Platoon Hero” will be getting a general release sometime next week, so stay tuned in the coming weeks for more news as sonn as it hits…

MAN-E-NEWS// The Heavy Metal Qee closing party (and custom sale at Fugi.me)…

Following our visit to the HMQ (Heavy Metal Qee) custom show earlier in the week (here), we couldn’t resist popping down again on Thursday night to catch up with a few of the show’s featured artists. Whilst we weren’t able to stay for long, one man we did manage to speak to was custom legend, Jon Paul Kaiser. Letting slip that he’s currently planning a full time leap into toys soon, we can only imagine what this is going to mean for his already steady output of production and custom pieces- world domination?!! His entry, “Untitled”, was inspired by Nottingham based sludgecore metal group Iron Monkey, featuring the same engaging mix of hand drawn detailing and meticulous brush work that we’ve come to expect from JPK’s unique b/w style- a truly stand out piece that stayed true to the Qee design…

[Jon Paul Kaiser & Myself]

One of our favourite “how did they do that?!” pieces from the show (believe me, there was a few!) was Mark Treharne‘s “Brainstorm”, so it came with great pleasure to get a chance to speak with the man himself about the custom’s creation. Funnily enough, the intricate grey dome head piece was originally a rubber dog toy before Mark added LED lit tubes, a Toyer incrusted pod and VR visor! Mounted on a smooth grey platform with a sparkling blue inlay, Mark’s minimal choice of colours really help to bring the custom’s production qualities to the forefront. A Design Technology teacher by day, Mark mentioned that he is also currently working on a custom toy after-school club for his pupils (boy, I wish he had been at my school!).

Creator of the beautifully sculpted “Acetone to the Bone” (the red, 3 eyed satanic dog creature!), P J Constable was the youngest entrant to the HMQ show at only 15. Anyone interested in seeing more of his work will be interested to know that he will be exhibiting a piece at the upcoming Flatties “Dragon” show on Saturday, August 18th at 6pm at The Sho Gallery in Cardiff. Check his site here for more details…

Whilst the show sadly closed on Thursday night, anyone interested in grabbing their favourite piece will be glad to know that the 30 heavy metal infused customs are available from the Fugi.me store now. With prices starting at £30 for Fordybo’s “Mortimer”, and going all the way up to £1,400 for Lunartik‘s monumental “Waves” Knucklebear custom (pictured above), there’s a piece suitable for all budgets. Anyone interested should head over to the store quick, as many of the customs are finding new homes already…

MAN-E-NEWS// The Heavy Metal Qee Custom Show revealed…

On passing through Covent Garden yesterday we couldn’t resist taking a quick diversion to Forbidden Planet to check out the newly opened HMQ (Heavy Metal Qee) Custom Show, and boy are we glad that we did! With a staggering 30 of the UK’s finest artists on board, each and every custom proved to be a winner; from Lunartik’s Hokusai inspired ‘Waves’ Knuckle Bear, to Robotic Industries’ meticulously recreated ‘Marshall’ amp, each interpretation took the heavy metal theme to a new and imaginative place. With the show running for another 2 days, be sure to head down for the close on Thursday (April 19th) at 6pm, where 22 of the featured artists will be on hand to talk toys, and more importantly, sign HMQ show books (read more here)!

Participating artists include: Jon-Paul Kaiser, Matt JOnes, Jim Freckingham, Fark FK, DMS, A Little Stranger, Lisa Rae Hansen, Michael Harrism, Zro, RunDMB, Chris Morris, Fadeworks, Sneaky Raccoon, Lunabee, Penny Taylor, Adam Lister, Hoakser, Alto, Mimic, Zukaty, Fordybo, Amigurumi Island, Tesselate, Jack Wade, Flatties, Mark Treharne, Rhys Inkbotz Brown, PJ Constable, Planet Domu, and Lex Luthor.

Check out all of the featured designs pictured below (advance apologies for the amateur photography!)…

MAN-E-NEWS// The Pandaimyo 5″ Mini Qee from Jon Paul Kaiser…

Following the success of a number of 5″ Mini Qees over the past year including the stunning Captain Sturnbrau, Jon Paul Kaiser and Toy2R have once again teamed up for the release of Pandaimyo! Originally featuring as a one-off custom Dunny in April of last year, the samurai panda warrior appears to be making a smooth transition to the familiar 5″ format, if anything appearing more detailed and better suited to the new platform. No solid news on pricing or availability, but our guess is that these guys will be making an appearance sometime this summer for around $28 each…

MAN-E-NEWS// Jon Paul Kaiser x Toy2R x Yoyamart Star Wars project teased…

Jon Paul Kaiser has just revealed a tentative image from his latest project, a collaboration with Toy2R and Yoyamart. With just an image of the Death Star to go on, we can only begin to speculate what this is going to entail- judging by the lack of an official Star Wars or Lucas Film presence, we’re guessing that this will be (at least initially) a custom toy run. The date, 10.11.12, just so happens to coincide with the first day of NYCC 2012, so the money is on that whatever is planned, New York will be the place to witness it. Expect more news on this massive project as soon as it hits…
